AI agents — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity — have become the new brand authorities, summarizing and positioning brands for consumers before they ever reach a brand's own channels. Brands increasingly don't control their own narrative: AI infers positioning from third-party sources, collapses multi-product portfolios to a single attribute, and levies a 'bland tax' on undifferentiated brands by omitting them outright. Optimizing for it (GEO) is a brand-clarity problem, not an SEO one. The pattern: brand identity authored by a non-human audience the brand can influence but not command.
